Topic 2 Understanding the Concept of Digital Literacy

Digital Skills:

a set of skills needed for handling information in a computerized form.

Digital skills involve operational, formal, information and strategic skills and address the following three (3) levels:

  • accessing and exploring digital content,
  • creating digital content,
  • exchanging and communicating digital content.

It is important for the users to develop critical thinking skills as they access to digital resources and to evaluate the accuracy of the online content.

Technical skills (also called ICT skills):

a set of skills needed to understand and operate with hardware and software and computers functionality.

Technical skills along with digital skills compose the integrative concept of Digital Literacy.

ICT and digital skills can be taught through various ways and methods:

  • school education
  • educational and training programs
  • Informal tools and methodologies (e.g. self-learning)

Nowadays, the acquisition of these skills may improve employment and income opportunities.

Basic ICT & Digital skills

  • Productivity Software

It is the software system that allows to convert information (e.g. documents, presentations, worksheets etc.) in various formats.

  • Operating systems

This skill refer to the standard operation of a computer, a mobile device etc.

  • Communication tools

–Social Networks and Social Media

  • Content creation and editing

Content creation entails the creation of audiovisual content through typography, illustration and photography and the ability of post-editing and modifying it.

Advanced ICT & Digital skills

Computer programming

Computer programming is a wide term that stands for the creation, design and construction of primary computer software and applications.

Big data

Big Data are large, diverse sets of information that grow at ever-increasing rates. It encompasses the volume of information, the velocity or speed at which it is created and collected, and the variety or scope of the data points being covered.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting critical systems and sensitive information from digital attacks. Cybersecurity measures are designed to combat threats against networked systems and applications.

Digital entrepreneurship

This term describes the transition of the traditional entrepreneurship in the digital economical environment. Digital entrepreneurship highlights changes in entrepreneurial practice, theory, and education.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI is the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.
